Ecuadorian authorities have arrested Luisa Gonzalez, a former presidential candidate, as part of an investigation into suspected irregularities in the financing of her 2023 election campaign, according to Reuters.
The investigations focus on identifying the source of about $500,000 suspected of being used to finance electoral advertisements between May and August 2023, through legal entities without disclosing the sources of funds or the identity of the contributors.
The Public Prosecution reported that seven people are under investigation regarding the sources of funds and electoral contributions, while three people were arrested on suspicion of involvement in a money laundering case. Gonzalez denied any wrongdoing, while her party's leadership described the case as politically motivated.
