China: New draft law seeks to pursue corruption suspects abroad | CUAC
Civil Union – Follow-ups
China began reviewing a new draft law on combating cross-border corruption on Wednesday, aimed at strengthening the authorities’ ability to pursue, repatriate, and hold accountable officials accused of corruption who are outside the country, as well as recover illicit funds and assets and enhance international cooperation in combating corruption.
The draft law was presented during a session of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, as part of Beijing’s efforts to strengthen its legal tools for tackling cross-border corruption crimes.
The draft comes as part of China’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign, launched by the Chinese leadership in 2012, which has involved extensive investigations into officials in the Communist Party, government, and military.
The draft law is expected to undergo three readings by China’s legislature before being put to a vote, meaning that its entry into force could take several months.
