Civil Union – Follow-up
An Iraqi anti-corruption court has sentenced MPs Alia Nassayif and Ashwaq Salem Hassan to seven years in prison in separate cases involving unlawful enrichment and the concealment of information in financial disclosure forms.
According to the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), the court ordered Alia Nassayif to return approximately $22.7 million, in addition to a fine equivalent to the amount of unlawful enrichment.
Ashwaq Salem Hassan was ordered to return approximately $4.5 million, along with a similar fine.
According to the figures cited in the report, the total value of the amounts and fines imposed on the two MPs exceeds $54 million.
Iraqi authorities had linked the two cases to a broader investigation into suspected corruption.
The Integrity Commission stated that the rulings also included three-year prison sentences for concealing information in financial disclosure forms; however, the court applied the more severe penalty of seven years in prison.
OCCRP noted that the rulings are not yet final, and that the Integrity Commission has retained the right to seek additional compensation once the judgments become legally final.
