Thailand | 27 Arrested in Identity Card Fraud Case | CUAC
Civil Union – Follow-ups
The Royal Thai Police announced the arrest of 27 people in Surat Thani Province as part of an investigation into a suspected network allegedly involved in manipulating civil registration procedures and illegally issuing identity cards to individuals who were not eligible to receive them.
Police said the investigation led to the issuance of arrest warrants for 33 people, including four government officials, individuals who acted as witnesses or certifiers, as well as a number of migrant workers.
Authorities suspect that intermediaries and officials at registration offices assisted Myanmar nationals in illegally obtaining identity cards intended for individuals who did not have a status in the civil registration system.
Police confirmed that investigations are continuing to uncover the network’s wider connections and identify those involved.
