The Hungarian authorities detained the former governor of the Central Bank, György Matolczi, and interrogated him as part of an investigation related to suspicions of financial fraud and irregularities in the management of public assets linked to institutions established by the bank during his tenure in office.
The investigations focus on public assets worth about 288 billion forints, which were deposited in an institution affiliated with the Central Bank, amid suspicions of sham financial transactions and real estate investments at exaggerated prices that caused major financial losses.
The Public Prosecution also issued an international arrest warrant against the former governor’s son, Adam Matolci, on suspicion of his involvement in a financial fraud case. The former governor denies committing any wrongdoing, while the case is still under investigation, and the accusations against him were not proven once he was arrested.
