Civil Union – Follow ups
The Philippine Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has launched an investigation into more than 200 employees of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) over suspected involvement in a scheme to sell government positions to applicants in exchange for money.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the investigation covers current and former officials in the bureau’s regional offices, as part of a broader campaign to combat corruption within the agency.
The investigation follows the arrest on August 24 of a female employee at the Bureau of Fire Protection office in San Fernando City, Pampanga. She was arrested during an entrapment operation after allegedly asking an applicant for 500,000 Philippine pesos in exchange for guaranteeing a government position. Authorities reportedly caught her while receiving an initial payment of 300,000 pesos.
According to authorities, the amounts allegedly demanded from applicants for jobs or promotions ranged from 100,000 to 800,000 pesos.
The Bureau of Fire Protection emphasized that official recruitment is free of charge and conducted through an electronic recruitment system.
