South Africa | Man Arrested in Fraud Case Linked to Tembisa Hospital Contracts | CUAC
Civil Union – Follow-up
The Serious Commercial Crime and Corruption Investigation Unit of South Africa’s Hawks arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of involvement in a fraud and corruption case linked to procurement and contracts at Tembisa Hospital in Gauteng Province.
The suspect was arrested on Friday, August 28, 2026, at OR Tambo International Airport while returning from abroad.
According to police, the suspect is connected to a complex investigation into irregularities in the hospital’s procurement processes, involving allegations of fraud, corruption, forgery, money laundering, and violations of the Public Finance Management Act.
Authorities suspect that some hospital officials colluded with service providers to exploit the quotation system for transactions worth less than 500,000 South African rand, with the aim of bypassing formal tender procedures.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court, on Monday, August 31, 2026.
The arrest forms part of a wider investigation into alleged corruption at Tembisa Hospital, where previous investigations uncovered suspicious payments amounting to hundreds of millions of rand.
