South Korea | Judge Accused of Receiving Benefits and Hospitality Worth 1.36 Million Won | CUAC
Civil Union – Follow-ups
South Korea’s Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) has charged Judge Ji Gwi-yeon over allegedly receiving benefits and hospitality worth approximately 1.36 million Korean won, in violation of laws prohibiting bribery and the receipt of improper benefits.
The case concerns a hospitality bill totaling approximately 4.09 million won, which was paid by two lawyers during a meeting with the judge, with the judge’s share of the hospitality estimated at around 1.36 million won.
The CIO did not charge the judge with bribery, as there was no evidence establishing a quid pro quo or a direct connection between the hospitality he received and his judicial duties or decisions.
The case comes as South Korean authorities continue efforts to strengthen oversight of conflicts of interest and benefits received by public officials and judges, and to address such matters in accordance with anti-corruption laws.
