Sri Lanka | Former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake Arrested on Corruption Charges | CUAC
Civil Union – Follow-up Sri Lankan authorities arrested former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake on Monday, following an investigation into allegations that public funds were used to pay the salaries of three employees who were reportedly performing private tasks for him instead of carrying out their duties at the National Lotteries Board. Karunanayake’s arrest came after he was questioned by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). The commission stated that the employees had been hired under contracts for a special project but allegedly did not provide actual services to the National Lotteries Board, despite receiving salaries and allowances from its funds. After appearing before a Colombo court, Karunanayake was released on bail and was prohibited from leaving the country. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
