Uganda: Revenue Authority Official Arrested for Soliciting a $60,000 Bribe | CUAC
Civil Union – Follow-ups Uganda's Revenue Authority has arrested a senior customs official after he was caught allegedly accepting a $60,000 bribe (approximately 220 million Ugandan shillings) during a security operation at a restaurant in the capital, Kampala. Authorities identified the suspect as Geoffrey Ssozi, Director of Field Operations in the Customs Department of the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). He was arrested last Thursday following a sting operation carried out by the authority's internal investigations unit. According to officials, Ssozi initially demanded $100,000 from an investor in exchange for intervening in an ongoing tax audit involving the investor's company. The amount was later reduced to $60,000, leading to the operation that resulted in his arrest. A customs clearing agent suspected of acting as an intermediary in the transaction was also taken into custody, while investigations are continuing to determine whether other individuals were involved in the case. The Uganda Revenue Authority confirmed that the seized money will be presented as evidence before the court. Source: Daily Monitor (Uganda)
