Ecuador: Former President Lenín Moreno Sentenced to Five Years in Prison in Bribery Case | CUAC
Civil Union – Follow-up An Ecuadorian court on Friday sentenced former President Lenín Moreno to five years in prison after finding him guilty of bribery in a corruption case linked to the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric power project, which was built by the Chinese company Sinohydro. The court also permanently barred Moreno from holding public office in the future. The case involves a corruption network accused of receiving approximately $76.1 million in bribes between 2009 and 2018, through sham consulting contracts connected to the project. Moreno served as vice president from 2007 to 2013, during which period the alleged violations occurred, before becoming president of Ecuador from 2017 to 2021. Moreno has denied any involvement in the wrongdoing and said he plans to appeal the verdict. Source: Reuters
