Civil Union – Follow-up
Nigerian authorities have charged a man identified as Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew with forgery and impersonation, following allegations that he created a fictitious government agency called the “Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council” and presented himself as its Director-General.
According to Reuters, the alleged agency managed to obtain an office inside the Federal Secretariat, while a budget allocation estimated at nearly $1 million was reportedly earmarked for it. The group also attempted to open accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Reuters quoted official investigations as saying that Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency found no evidence that government funds had actually been disbursed to the alleged fictitious agency.
The defendant denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the organization he headed was legitimate, and pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
