South Africa: Five Emfuleni Municipality Employees Arrested Over Fraud and Infrastructure Tampering | CUAC
Civil Union – Follow-up
Authorities in South Africa have arrested five employees of Emfuleni Municipality in Gauteng Province on suspicion of involvement in fraud, theft, and tampering with critical infrastructure, following allegations that they illegally reconnected electricity supplies in exchange for payments.
SABC News reported on Sunday that the five employees, who work in the municipality’s Revenue and Electricity departments, are suspected of receiving direct payments to reconnect electricity supplies that had been disconnected by the municipality, without obtaining the required permits.
The report indicated that these practices caused financial losses to the municipality.
The arrests were carried out by the anti-crime unit of the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
The suspects are expected to appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court, while investigations remain ongoing. Authorities are also expected to arrest additional individuals who may be linked to the case.
The sources stressed that the allegations do not constitute proof of guilt, and that the suspects remain legally presumed innocent until final court judgments are issued.
