Cambodia | Authorities Gather Evidence Against Leaders of Online Scam Networks | CUAC
Civil Union – Follow-up Cambodian authorities are gathering evidence against individuals suspected of being behind large-scale online scam operations, in preparation for potential legal action against those involved, according to a government official responsible for combating fraud. Chai Sinarith, who heads a government anti-fraud committee, told Reuters that taking legal action against network leaders, their associates, owners, facilitators, and protectors requires time and sufficient evidence. He emphasized the importance of cooperation with international partners in this effort. He added that information provided by international agencies had enabled authorities to take action against a number of suspects, while warning that revealing details of investigations too early could prompt some suspects to flee. The efforts come as Cambodian authorities continue their campaign against large-scale online scam centers operating in Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries. These operations have been linked to human trafficking, worker exploitation, and the forced participation of victims in online scams. The official also said authorities are expanding their investigations into financial networks linked to the Prince Group, which the United States says has been associated with online fraud and money laundering involving billions of dollars.
